Gate valves and globe valves serve different priorities in industrial piping. A gate valve is normally selected for isolation with low resistance when fully open. A globe valve is often considered where regulating performance matters and additional pressure loss is acceptable.
Compare the required function, fluido, pressão, temperatura, operating frequency and available installation space before selecting either design.
When a Gate Valve Is the Better Starting Point
- Pipeline isolation: fully open or fully closed operation.
- Low open-valve resistance: the gate retracts from the main flow path.
- Infrequent operation: utility and process lines that normally stay open.
Allow clearance for the selected stem arrangement and operator. A standard gate valve is generally unsuitable for continuous throttling, where a partially open gate can be exposed to wear and vibration.
Gate Valve Selection Limits
Choose the body and sealing materials for the actual medium and pressure-temperature conditions. Suspended solids, corrosive chemicals and frequent cycling require specific consideration; a standard wedge gate valve should not automatically be treated as a slurry valve.
Compare gate valve designs by model rather than assuming every gate valve has the same flow passage, sealing performance or material compatibility.
When to Consider a Globe Valve
A globe valve moves a disc or plug relative to the seat. Suitable trim can provide useful regulating characteristics. The internal flow path generally creates more resistance than a fully open gate valve.
- Regulating duty: choose a trim and actuator suited to the required flow range.
- Instalação: follow the manufacturer’s flow-direction marking and instructions.
- Shutoff: define the leakage criterion and test conditions.
- Materiais: match the body, aparar, packing and gaskets to the fluid and temperature.
Valve size, price and sealing performance depend on the actual configuration. Globe valves are not subject to a universal DN200 size limit, and neither type is always cheaper or always better sealed.
How to Compare Quotations
Give each supplier the same duty and specification: valve function, fluido, tamanho, pressão operacional e de projeto, temperatura, padrão de conexão, materiais, actuation and inspection requirements. Compare the complete configuration rather than the product name or unit price alone.
